Treatment: ketogenic diet + intermittent fasting
p.40 Proteins: people with some genotype following vegetarian/vegan diet may increase the risk of cancer and inflammatory diseases.
p.41 asian people have genetic advantage "to utilize the anticancer properties of soy, a capacity that 40% of americans do not have"
vegan/vegatarian diets - not proper balance of essential ammino acids. In addition, non essential amino acids can be come "conditionally essential" since they cannot be made in the body if the essential ones are not enough (phenylalanine -> tyrosine). This leads to the body using internal reserves from tissue/bones.
fortified with B12 and folic acid vegan foods (grains) => toxic form of B12, folic acid
for ketogenic diet:
20% of calories should be from animal proteins. Too much proteins can inhibit ketosis.

avoid agave
sugar alcohols (xylitol, ...) - contain toxins due to processing; irritable bowel syndrome,
OK to use - raw honey, monk fruit, chicory root, fresh stevia leaf -> all in small amounts
p.63 glucose and insulin: high blood glucose -> inhibit p53, promotes cancer proliferation, anti-apoptotic signaling, cell cycle progression, angiogenesis, stimulates the release of pro-inflammatory chemicals (cytokines) from fat cells, inhibits NK cells, cause production of IGF1, promotes metastasis, resistance to chemo drugs.
Insulin resistance is halmark of cachexia. Consuming carbs worsens cachexia. Diet with <20g carbs reverses cachexia.
p.68 Acid/Alcaline diet myth buster - tumors are surrounded by pH buffers. The diet is pro-inflammatory and diet rich in fruits and legumes increases insulin, glycolysis, growth factors and other tumor promoters.
Lab Tests: HbA1C, fasting glucose, IGF-1, fasting insulin.
Ideally all should be below normal lab levels!
p.71. ketosis - anti-angiogenesis, normal apoptosis, destabilizing tumor DNA, reducing insulin and IGF-1, enhances standard treatment (chemo/radiation)

- I3C (precursor to DIM) and DIM - inhibit the formation of the bad 16-alpha-hydroxyestrone estrogene metabolite and increase the production of the good 2-hydroxyestrone metabolite. Supplement with I3C. Anti-acids prevent conversion of I3C to DIM. Stomach acid also declines with age. Goitrogens in vegetables are not a problem if you have hashimoto. Flouride competes with iodine, so avoid flouridated water.
- calcium-D-glucarate - enhances the ability to excrete estrogen. Eat wild apples.
- reason for low progesterone: pesticides and toxins
- chasteberry tea (vitex) - increases progesterone and decreases estrogen
- cruciferous vegetables, resveratrol (activate CYP1A1)
- chrysoeriol (present in celery) (inhibit CYP1B1)
- quercetin, brocolli, rosemary (CYP2)
- phytoestrogens (isoflavones, lignans, coumestans, flavonols, stilbene)
- coumestans and flavonols: red clover sprouts, spinach, brussels sprouts, cocoa, onions, chives, kale, cranberries, romain lettuce, turnips greens, quercetin, myrcetin, keampferol.
- Rosemary and Thyme.
- rarely recommended: fermented organic soy (tofu, tempeh, miso) (only 30..40% of caucasian can convert daidzein to equol compared to 40..60% of asians. Seaweed in the asian diet also helps by enhancing the intestinal conversion to phyto estrogens). Soy in western diet leads to higher levels of genistein => stronger estrogenic effects than in traditional asian diet.
- fresh ground sesame, flax seeds (store <5 hours), and curly kale - balance hormones
- pumpkin - flax seed combo - first 2 weeks after menstruation (detox of estrogene)
- sunflower - sesame seeds combo - second half of the cycle (high Se, promotes progesterone)
- fish oil - first half of the cycle
- evening primrose oil - second half
Lab tests:
- blood serum: FSH, fasting insulin, thyroid hormones
- saliva test (better than blood) for: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone. Blood test does not differentiate between bound and free hormones resulting in false higher or normal readings.
- urine test is another alternative - used in research but not common in practice. Measures metabolites of estrogen (2- and 16-hydroxyestrone).
- Lab test companies: Meridian Valley 24-hour urine test; Diagnos-Techs saliva hormone test, DUTCH dried urine test.
- Exposure to environmental estrogens in everyday products
- Commercial meat and dairy products
- Hormonal replacement therapy and birth control pills
p.251 Chapter 11. Stress and Circadian Rhythms
p.262 bright light only during normal daylight time! melatonin is powerful anti cancer anti-oxidant that crosses the brain blood barrier. Vital for the immune system - affects the hormone prolactin which influences T and NK cells. It takes 3 hours of sleep before prolactin starts to be secreted, and 6 hours of prolactin secretion is necessary.
p.263 melatonin - (>10mg), recommended dose 20..40mg - impact circadian cycles and angiogenesis, natural aromatase inhibitor, enhances chemo therapy, sensitizes cancer to radiation while protecting healthy cells, protects against chemotherapy toxicity.
p.265 Internal clocks and intermittent fasting
fasting resets the circadian rhythm, it is a good stressor similar to acute immune or inflammatory response.
periodic fasting or at least eating within 8 hour window during daylight hours.
p.268 Hormesis and Adaptive Stress Responses
fasting, resveratrol, sulforaphanes, curcumin, capsaicin, allicin - activate stress response pathways that help protect against stress.
bitter melon - at least 3 active substances that help for diabetes. extract from bitter melon inhibits cancer growth.
dandelion, jerusalem artichokes, arugula
p.270 Key adrenal nutrients: vit.C, E, Mg
parsley, irish moss seaweed, purslane, borage (starflower) - restoration of adrenal glands
nori, wakame, arame, kombu - anti cancer, anti oxidant, anti inflammatory, anti diabetic
sunflower seeds, turnips, mustard greens
clams, swiss chard, cocoa powder, sunflower and sesame seeds
p.271 The power of adaptogenic herbs
ginseng, rhodiola, holy basil, ashwaganda, licorice root
holy basil for pancreatic cancer
licorice for estrogen balance
p.275 Chapter 12. Mental and Emotional Well-Being
p.284 Toxic Food:
gluten and A1 dairy
soaking and sprouting grains begins enzymatic action that breaks down the gluten into peptides, but does not eradicate the gluten content!
gluten linked to:
- osteporosis
- irritable/inflammatory bowel disease
- anemia
- cancer
- fatigue
- canker sores
- rheumathoid arthritis
- lupus
- multiple sclerosis and almost all auto immune diseases
- many psychiatric and neurological diseases: anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, dementia, migranes, epilepsy, neuropathy
- autism, heart disease, infertility
A1 casein triggers the release of beta-casomorphin-7 - linked to prostate cancer, stimulates angiogenesis.
Nutrient deficiencies: CoQ10, Mg, Omega-3, Melatonin, B2, B6, folate, B12, D3,
B6 - skipjack, tuna, chicken, bell peppers, turnip greens, shiitake mushrooms, spinach
p.294 Cannabinoids
Endocannabinoid system (ECS) - group of receptors in the brain (CB1 and CB2). Targeting ECS leads to anti-inflammatory, anti cachexia, metabolic, pain management, anti-seizure, sleep promoting effects, apoptosis and anti metastatic effect, anti angiogenesis, anti tumor cell migration.
THC - activates CB1
CBD - activates CB2. Proven anti cancer effect on multiple cancers
p.296 Keep a food-mood journal
- hungry, tired, bored,
- gas, bloating, cramping,
- undigested food in bowels, loose stools or constipation, hemorrhoids,
- night sweats, difficulty falling or staying asleep,
- energy levels (want to take a nap after you eat, feel anxious after eating)
- joint pain, headaches, skin breakouts
- how you feel and think. Were you more or less mentally sharp.
